When the show closes early
The past few months have been difficult for musical theatre in Australia. Shows have closed early. Tours have been cancelled. For performers, crew and musicians, the loss is not abstract. It is work, routine and often a piece of identity cut short, sometimes with little time to adjust.
When a show closes early, the loss is not just financial.
For many performers and crew, work in the arts is not simply what pays the bills. It is where a sense of self has been built, sometimes over years. A cancelled contract can bring a sudden, disorienting quiet. No rehearsal to go to. No company to be part of. No stage to walk onto.
That kind of loss does not always look like grief from the outside.
It might look like searching for the next contract before you have had time to take in the loss of this one. It might look like saying “I’m fine, it happens” to everyone except yourself. It might look like feeling strange for mourning a job when other people seem to be dealing with bigger things.
But grief does not need a hierarchy to be real.
There is grief for the show itself. The specific people. The specific room. The specific version of a story that will not be told again. And there can be a quieter grief underneath that too. Grief for what these closures seem to say about the industry, and for the question of whether the work you love can keep loving you back.
Both of those things can be true at once.
Counselling does not undo a cancelled contract or bring a show back. What it can offer is a space to let the loss be what it actually is, without rushing to reframe it, minimise it or turn it into a lesson too soon. Sometimes what is needed first is simply somewhere to say: this was hard, and it mattered.
If a closure, a cancelled contract, or a harder season in your creative work has left more sitting with you than you expected, you are welcome to get in touch. You do not need to have it figured out first.
