When you're used to making room for everyone else
Sometimes people become so used to considering everyone else that their own needs become harder to notice.
Some people are very good at making room for others.
They listen carefully. They notice changes in mood. They think about what other people might need, how something might land, or whether it is okay to speak openly.
This can come from care, sensitivity, responsibility, or long practice.
It can also become tiring.
When you are used to considering everyone else, your own needs can become harder to hear. You may know what others are feeling before you know what you are feeling. You may find yourself adjusting, softening, explaining, or holding back without even realising it.
Over time, that can create distance from yourself.
There may be a sense of being present for others, but not fully present with yourself. Or of being capable and responsive, while quietly unsure where your own preferences, limits, or feelings have gone.
Counselling can offer a space where that pattern does not have to keep running in the same way.
You do not need to manage the counsellor’s feelings. You do not need to make your experience easy to receive. You do not need to organise everything perfectly before it is spoken.
Instead, there can be room to notice what happens when your attention turns back toward you.
What do you feel? What do you want? What feels too much? What have you learned to keep quiet? What might need more space?
These questions do not always have immediate answers. Sometimes it takes time to notice your own needs again, especially if you have spent a long time adapting to the needs of others.
But noticing is a beginning.
Counselling can be a place to practise being heard without having to take care of everything around you.
Sometimes making room for yourself starts quietly, with the realisation that your experience belongs in the room too.
