When insight isn’t the same as change
Understanding something about yourself can be important, but it does not always mean change happens straight away.
Sometimes people come to counselling already able to name the pattern.
They may understand why they respond in certain ways. They may know where a feeling comes from, or recognise the situations that tend to bring it up. They may have thought about it, read about it, or spoken about it before.
But even with that understanding, the same response can still appear.
That can feel frustrating. There can be a sense of, I know this already, so why am I still doing it?
But insight and change are not always the same thing.
Understanding a pattern is important, but it does not automatically make the body, emotions, or nervous system feel ready to respond differently. Some patterns are deeply practised. Some were learned over a long time. Some may have helped you cope, protect yourself, or stay connected in situations where you had limited choices.
So it makes sense that change can take time.
Counselling can offer a space to stay with that process more gently. Not just to understand the pattern intellectually, but to notice how it lives in your thoughts, emotions, relationships, and body.
Sometimes change begins when there is enough space to slow the response down. To notice what happens before it takes over. To recognise the familiar pull, and begin to find small moments of choice.
This kind of change is often gradual.
It may not arrive as a sudden breakthrough. It may begin quietly, through repetition, reflection, and the experience of responding to yourself with more care.
Insight matters. But it is not the whole process.
Sometimes understanding is the beginning. Change is what slowly becomes possible when that understanding has somewhere safe to land.
If understanding a pattern has not been enough to shift it, you are welcome to get in touch.
